On Amitabh and my admiration

My Dear Amitabh:

With tears of pride in her eyes Saira handed over the print out of your eloquent tribute to my work in your blog. I read it once, then again and again.

As you yourself would be keenly aware, we actors are completely oblivious of ourselves and our surroundings while we perform and, even when we watch our work in the rushes shown to us, our senses and vision are trained to detect shortcomings more than accomplishments. That’s the only way we know to improve and render performances that come close to our own satisfaction. And it is always the audience who have the absolute right to acclaim or reject our work, however hard we may have worked to achieve perfection and excellence.

I am certainly privileged to know from your affectionate compliments that someone as knowledgeable and competent as you has liked my work. Yes, now that you have reminded me, I can recall the scenes that brought us together before the cameras for Shakti. I should say the respect and admiration are mutual. Not just Shakti, your work in several films I have watched has been world class and inimitable. In recent times I can remember Black and, if I remember right, Saira and I were at a loss for words at the premiere night, after the curtain came down, to express our myriad feelings of admiration for your outstanding performance. It is a pity the film missed the Oscar nomination. If any Indian actor, in my personal opinion, deserves the world’s most coveted award, it is you. I have heard so much about Paa which we didn’t catch up with.  You know how Saira is—she never could see me die in my films and she could not muster the courage to see your death scene in Paa.

Thank you, Amitabh, for your warm love and good wishes. May God keep you, Jaya and your family happy always.

DK

  2. This mutual admiration and the observation on details of each others' performance is just so much learning for "aam-janta"... I truly admire you two for being so honest and humble to each other. Learning gives Creativity. Creativity leads to Thinking. Thinking provides Knowledge. Knowledge makes people like you GREAT.

  7. One thing that amazes me about both Amtiji and Dilipji and that is the energy both of you seem to have after such a long and eventful life. No wonder both of you are legends. I haven't watched much of your movies as I am too young and only starting to watch old Indian movies. But legends of Dilip Kumar used to reach to us even in the place where I was born which was not even in India and had not even caught up with the modern world in any sense. And it is almost like a dream to be able to admire and learn about the legend from himself. Thank you for your effort.

  39. Being a follower of Cinema, it becomes impossible to stay away from movie buzz and when somebody of the calibre and ability of Dilip Kumar with a humongous body of work utters a word or exercises his finger to praise a thespian, it certainly deserves to be the day's Headline.
While I was growing up, Amitabh Bachchan's movies were often played on Doordarshan and every time I sat with my parents and relatives to watch my idol they compared the man to Dilip Kumar. I became very curious and wanted to quench my thirst by watching the man do what he does best, but unfortunately, those were not the days of DVDs and I had to wait for Doordarshan to show a Dilip Kumar movie. My wait finally came to an end when I saw him in 'Aadmi', I still remember, my parents were not engrossed to television but lost. Watching him for the first time on television, I had very high expectation, after all, he was then unarguably the greatest (still is for some if not most) actor to have graced the Indian screen and I was certainly not left disappointed. I was completely blown away with every gesture of his, the expression on his face when he delivered the dialogue or when his eyes lingered; it was truly magical in every sense of the word. I became a very ardent follower of his work and when I saw Shakti starring Amitabh and him for the first time; I realized they were so similar (if not identical) to each other in most aspects of acting. I was further enlightened about his work by my maternal uncle who had bought me cassettes of Ganga Jamuna, Sangharsh and my all time favourite Dil Diya Dard Liya. It was through these movies, I discovered the versatility of the actor and his performance in Dil Diya Dard Liya where he was challenged by the legendary Pran was a once in lifetime and still remains a landmark.
If one has to look back at the 50’s & 60’s of Indian Cinema, one would find only few actors in Ashok Kumar, Pran, Balraj Sahini, Sanjeev Kumar and only one actor who defines the word actor. I don’t consider Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand as actors; they were just there to entertain.
Dilip Kumar with the quality of work behind him was inspiration to every actor and if we never had Dilip Kumar we would have never got Amitabh Bachchan who to most of us became the greatest by learning the tricks from The Tragedy King. Is there any actor who can go beyond director’s vision and script? I can proudly say; we don’t have one but two in Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.

  81. Two legends/Two wonderful human beings/Two greatest actors of all time. How can one describe Mr. Dilip Kumar or Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. In the words of a great poet "Hazaron Saal Nargis apni Be Noori Pe Roti hai... Badi Mushkil se Hota Hai Chaman Mein Deeda War Paida"... This is what stars are made of. Humility and Dignity personified. Their calibre, the sense of expressing admiration. The coming generations will have a lot to learn from them. It is an honour to witness these legends in a lifetime. We are highly fortunate that we are witnessing history. May God bless you both with all his glory. Long live Mr.DK & Mr. AB

  82. Dilip Shahab is the living legend of Indian Cinema. He is the wonderful actor of entire Hindi film history. No doubt, Amitabh is the phenomenal actor of Hindi cinema and he has great contribution to make Indian cinema outside India. Also, Amitabh is the only Indian widely known outside India.
Dilip Shahab has always remained as ideal for Amitabh, and he never hesitated to express this fact. This shows the greatness of Mr Bachchan. Today’s new actors should take a lesson from this. And this expression from Dilip Shahab is the best compliment to Mr Bachchan I ever know.

  96. Dear Sir, only an honest soul can bring out the truest emotions even in the business of acting which just a pretense of being another character. Only the soul searchers can be the most accomplished actors, far from the gimickry of publicity seen these days. I haven't seen Bradman but it seems more analogous to Gavaskar - Tendulkar. The former always at the forefront of new horizons conquered many times over by the latter. Still in my humble opinion, you and Sunny will always be unmatched in their respective craft. Unfortunately, there are no heirs to Lata and Rafi even distantly.

  98. Dear Dilip Sir - My wishes to you and the family for a wonderful 2012. I pray to Allah to accord you best of health and happiness from his treasure.
I have been fortunate enough to have watched majority of your masterpieces (they were indeed so because of your sheer presence) such as Paighaam, Naya Daur, Ram aur Shyam, Mughal-e-azam, Leader et al. In my opinion, you are the one of the finest artists that our Indian film industry has produced (the only other being the legendary Mohd. Rafi). I am sure your acting skills will continue to be the guiding light for budding artists for years to come. Ameen. Khuda Hafiz. Aamir Khurshid

The words used by the great Thespian speaks volume of his vocubalary and culture which he got from his well cultured and religious family. Dilip Saab Zindabad. Tum ko Hamari Umar lag Jaye.

  102. At the outset, great to see you on twitter & am glad that you have your own Blog. With due respect to Amitabhji, you have been very kind to him. But the truth is that you are a legend in your own right & I cannot think of a single actor as yet who can even remotely hope to achieve what you have. Just as the new generation thrives on Pierce Brosnan as Bond conveniently forgetting Sean Connery...so is the case of Amitabh Bachchan.

Your scenes from Kohinoor (mirror scene), Paigham etc., copied by Amitabh in Amar Akbar Anthony, Dostana etc., gave him the edge. No actor today can honestly say that they are not inspired by you. As mentioned earlier by Aasheesh Kumar, Amitabhji paled into insignificance in SHAKTI.

My well wishes & prayers will always with you. You take care Sir!
